Sure there are a lot of characters who make life difficult for Reynie and his friends—Jackson, Jillson, and Martina Crowe, for instance—but the big, bad antagonist here is Mr. Curtain, no ifs, ands, or buts. He's the one who causes Reynie to doubt himself and to consider (just for a second) taking the easy route and betraying his friends by giving in to the Whisperer. And Mr. Curtain is also the one Reynie ultimately has to confront (and outwit) in order to prevail.
