John Canty

John Canty is just pure evil, so he's totally the antagonist. He makes life hard for Tom as a child by beating him when he doesn't bring home enough money. Then he makes life hard for Prince Edward by constantly attempting to kidnap him. Since the antagonist is the person who basically messes everything up for the protagonist, we'd say that John Canty is our man.
