It's Ned's bad decision to trade the car for the horse that really places our protagonist in a pickle. Moreover, Ned is deceitful because he loops everyone into his ploy to get his cousin Bobo out of debt; he also tricks Boss Priest into betting all of his money on Lightning and then goes out of his way to make the horse lose.
