- Lucius works for his grandfather's bank on Saturdays.
- One day in May 1905, Boon Hogganbeck barges in to tell Lucius that his grandfather in St. Louis has passed away. His family will attend the funeral service, leaving behind Lucius and Grandfather's brand new Winton Flyer.
- Boon lays out his ploy to drive Grandfather's car to Memphis, Tennessee.
- Lucius is at first hesitant, but then he agrees to go along.
- Lucius and Boon discover Ned stowed away in the back seat of the car, and they reluctantly agree to take him with them.
- The car gets stuck at Hell Creek, and Lucius has to help to push it out of the mud.
- The guys finally arrive in Memphis, and Lucius is surprised to learn that they will be staying at a boarding house and not at the hotel they usually stay in when they visit Memphis.
