Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
When the innkeeper first meets Cam, she mocks him, saying, "'Chopping wood? Ha-ha-ha'" (11.14). She's laughing because he only has one arm. Ouch, right? It's pretty cold to tease someone about missing a limb, even if it is lighthearted, but when she does we're reminded that Cam's life—like his body—has been permanently altered by the war. His arm represents what he's lost to the war, and marks him as the lone survivor in the Downland—he is visibly different.
Can you find other examples within the text of Cam's arm coming into play? How do you think he feels about being down an arm?
