Seriously, Leggatt is the only person in the world the captain cares about. He also feels suspicious and paranoid about all of the men in his crew, especially his first and second mates. It makes sense, then, that the captain would go out of his way to protect Leggatt at any costs. In this story, it's the captain and Leggatt against the world.
