What’s Up With the Epigraph?

Epigraphs are like little appetizers to the great main dish of a story. They illuminate important aspects of the story, and they get us headed in the right direction.

It does no harm to the romance of the sunset to know a little about it. —Pale Blue Dot, Carl Sagan

Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T.S. Eliot

These two quotes seem to represent Natasha and Daniel's perspectives. Logical Natasha has a scientific explanation for everything. Like the famed astronomer Carl Sagan, she wonders why people feel the need to ascribe events to a higher power when science is amazing all by itself.

On the other hand, Daniel has a poet's heart, so this quote from T.S. Eliot represents him well. It also highlights his desire for somebody to save him from making a decision about his future, as Natasha points out when they fight. He would rather believe that his life is in the hands of Fate so that he doesn't really have to take responsibility for his tough decisions.

With these competing quotes representing our leading players, the story begins.
