Who is the narrator, can she or he read minds, and, more importantly, can we trust her or him?
First Person (Peripheral Narrator)
The Tale of Despereaux is told from the perspective of a narrator who isn't directly involved with the story. The narrator serves as a sort of omniscient storyteller and is revealing the story of all the main characters—like Despereaux, Roscuro, and Miggery Sow—as though he or she is speaking directly to the reader and telling a cozy bedtime story.
The narrative skips around through time as it tells four overlapping stories focused on four different characters. The storylines meet at the end of the book when all the main characters are involved in the final scenes.
