Lord Mark Timeline and Summary

  • Lord Mark first shows up at Maud Lowder's place for dinner, where he sits next to Milly Theale and strikes up a conversation with her. The two get along well.
  • Soon afterward, Lord Mark takes Milly to a room in the house where there's a painting of a woman who looks just like Milly. Milly cries at the resemblance, but Lord Mark is totally clueless as to why.
  • In the coming weeks, Lord Mark has a few other opportunities to meet with Milly, and he starts to develop a crush on her. Deep drama, since Lord Mark is Aunt Maud's pick to be Kate Croy's husband.
  • Lord Mark visits Milly in Italy and proposes marriage to her. She refuses, and Lord Mark is humiliated to realize that she, just like Kate Croy, likes the penniless nobody Merton Densher more than him.
  • Lord Mark returns to London and tries to propose to Kate Croy (way to rebound, buddy). But when Kate sends him away, he decides that something must be going on between her and Merton.
  • Lord Mark travels all the way back to Italy just so he can tell Milly that Merton and Kate are secretly engaged. He knows he doesn't have a chance with Milly. He's just feeling spiteful and wants to ruin her love for Merton. And, you know, break the heart of a dying girl. Jerk.
  • Lord Mark's visit causes Milly to take a turn for the worse, and she dies soon afterward.
  • Undeterred, Lord Mark hears about a good opportunity to rent out some of his house for a tidy sum of money. He moves in with Maud Lowder while the renters are in his place, and that's the last we hear of him. There's no punishment for the fact that he basically hastened Milly Theale's death by breaking her heart.
