- Milly leaves Sir Luke's office feeling excited. She realizes that "living," as Luke put it, might not be a physical state, but something that you actively choose to do each and every day.
- Kate Croy comes over to her hotel the same evening as her session with Sir Luke. As Milly watches her get out of her carriage, she can't help but think of how fondly Merton Densher looks on this woman.
- Kate wants to know how things went at the doctor's office. Milly simply says that things are fine and that Sir Luke is a lovely man. Kate then asks if anything specific is wrong with her, to which Milly answers that there's nothing to worry about. Notice, though, that she never says nothing is wrong with her.
- At this, Kate hugs her and asks her what she plans on doing. Milly replies that she plans on travelling and wants Kate to help her with it. Kate doesn't understand, but agrees to do whatever Milly needs.
