Tortilla Flat Preface Summary

When Danny is 25 years old, the U.S. declares war on Germany during World War I. He and his friends Pilon and Big Joe Portagee go to enlist.
Danny is sent to Texas to break mules. Pilon goes to Oregon with the infantry, and Big Joe goes to jail.
