Each of The Souls is the protagonist in his or her own little narrative, but together they're something even greater: the protagonist of The View from Saturday.

If you were a fancy literary critic, you might call this a collective character, and you might say something cool about how there are foursomes in other books like The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or Little Women.
