Tiffany Aching Timeline and Summary

  • Tiffany works on the farm and takes care of her little brother, whom she doesn't like that much.
  • She encounters some strange creatures one day, one of whom she hits with a frying pan. After that Tiffany decides to go to the teacher tents to see if she can learn more about magical creatures.
  • At the teacher tents, she meets Miss Tick, a bona fide witch. She asks her about becoming a witch and tells her that her grandma, Granny Aching, was a witch who took care of the chalk lands.
  • That night Tiffany wakes up to the sound of tiny blue people stealing their sheep and chicken eggs. She catches them and yells at them, and they put everything back.
  • The next day Tiffany's parents realize that Wentworth has gone missing. Dun dun dun…
  • Tiffany goes off to find Miss Tick, but she's too late—the witch already left to find backup, though in her place she's left her talking toad.
  • With her talking toad friend, Tiffany runs off to find the blue men and hunt down her brother. It turns out that the Queen of Fairyland has taken her brother.
  • When she gets to the pictsie home, she finds that their leader—the kelda—is dying and wants to name our girl Tiffany the next kelda.
  • Tiffany becomes the next kelda, gets engaged to a pictsie named Rob Anybody, and sets off toward Fairyland.
  • They get through the entrance to Fairyland, where they encounter lots of terrifying creatures that the Queen sends to hurt them. They fight them all off, though—even a drome, which traps you in its dreams.
  • Tiffany runs into Roland, the Baron's son who went missing last year, and says she'll bring him back too, though he's afraid.
  • Finally Tiffany finds Wentworth—but in doing so, she also finds the Queen.
  • After a face-off with the Queen, Tiffany grabs Wentworth, Roland, and the pictsies and they rush into another drome, where Tiffany controls the dream to look like the Jolly Sailor tobacco label.
  • The Queen follows them into the dream and they rush off to find the entrance to the real world.
  • Only Tiffany and Roland make it through—and the Queen, who decides that she's going to stay in the real world and rule it.
  • At that moment Granny Aching and her two sheep dogs come down from the sky and attack all the Queen's creatures; after Granny and her pups leave, Tiffany faces off against the Queen again.
  • This time Tiffany wins and succeeds in dumping the Queen back into Fairyland.
  • Afterward the pictsies and Wentworth appear. Tiffany tells Wentworth and Roland to go on down to the village without her, because she's very tired.
  • While they're gone, Miss Tick finally appears with the two witches she brought as backup—they tell Tiffany that she's definitely a witch, and that they'll come for her when she's old enough to learn more about witchcraft and magic.
  • Then Tiffany goes home, where her parents are delighted to see her and tell her to go to bed right away. She's a little upset that Roland gets all the credit for the rescue.
  • One day while she's churning butter, Roland comes in and apologizes about taking credit. She tells him it's okay—but that when he's the Baron, he better be good to the people.
  • Roland leaves and the pictsies appear, asking Tiffany if it's okay if they select a new kelda. She says yes and goes back to butter-churning.
