One major problem Maisie faces is that "adults" (read: all those Peter Pan syndrome narcissists floating around this narrative) consistently let her down. First her parents and then her stepparents prove themselves to be too immature and selfish to put her best interests before their own. This means that they leave Maisie in the lurch over and over again.
