Mrs. Beale, née Miss Overmore Timeline and Summary
MoreMrs. Beale, née Miss Overmore Timeline and Summary
- As a governess, Miss Overmore follows Maisie from her mother's house to her father's, saying that she can't bear to be without little Maisie.
- Soon enough, though, it's clear that Miss Overmore has other plans: she and Beale start living in sin, using Maisie as a mere pretext for their relationship.
- The plot then thickens when, having married Beale, Miss Overmore (now Mrs. Beale) starts seeing Maisie's stepfather, Sir Claude.
- Things get even more complicated after that, as Mrs. Beale fights with Mrs. Wix over what Sir Claude should do.
- Mrs. Beale remains unwilling to sacrifice Sir Claude, and in the end, she wins him back, having almost lost him following his flight to France.
- Mrs. Beale and Sir Claude end up together, just as Maisie and Mrs. Wix do. But Mrs. Beale has made such a nasty scene at the end that we wonder whether "together" really means happily ever after in this case. We think not.
