Sir Claude enters Maisie's life first in the form of a picture given to her by Mrs. Wix, who announces that Maisie's mother is to be married to a handsome charmer.
Sir Claude looks after Maisie but sometimes neglects her—like when he drops her off with Mrs. Beale, then disappears without explanation for months.
