• When the book opens up, Cullen Witter is standing over his dead cousin Oslo at the morgue; he's there to identify the body because no one else in his family wants to do it.
• Upon going home, everyone is pretty bummed out about Oslo's death, especially his Aunt Julia. Cullen hangs out with his friend Lucas and his brother, Gabriel, because they're his best friends; their little trio is tight and they don't have many other friends.
• At one point, Lucas convinces Cullen to go on a double date with him—he's asked this girl, Alma, who is newly divorced, to be Cullen's date. Cullen agrees and they all go to the movies and make out.
• When Cullen gets home the next day, he finds out that Gabriel is missing. There's no sign of him anywhere, and the Witter family ends up calling the police and just waiting…
• Over the next few weeks, things are not going well. Cullen stops going out with Alma, and he and his family are basically miserable all the time as they wait for any news on Gabriel.
• One day, his dad brings a psychic home in order to help them find Gabriel. She tells them that he's dead and shows them all where to dig, but it turns out to be false information.
• Cullen starts dating Ada Taylor, a girl he's had a crush on for years. Things seem to be going well between them, although Ada sometimes tells him that he doesn't love her but instead just loves the idea of her.
• But then everyone starts getting more desperate. His mom stops going out or doing anything at all, and his dad is just reading stories about missing kids all day. To make matters worse, Ada has stopped speaking to Cullen and is spending all her time with her ex-boyfriend.
• Finally, when Cullen has almost lost all hope, he looks out the window one day and sees his little brother coming home. And everything is okay.
