- We meet Murray one day when Jack Gladney is walking around campus. Right away, we can tell the guy's a bit offbeat. Murray says he's pretty impressed with Jack's whole Hitler Studies shtick.
- A few days later, Murray invites Jack to go check out a tourist trap called "The Most Photographed Barn in America." He uses the opportunity to tell Jack that there's really no difference between real and fake in the modern world.
- Murray runs into Jack at the supermarket. He talks some more smack about modern culture and tells Jack he really likes Babette. Jack doesn't seem to mind.
- Murray has Jack and Babette over for dinner, although he lives in a cramped bachelor apartment with only a hotplate to cook with. He manages to cook a great Cornish game hen anyway.
- Murray runs into Jack and his family after they've all evacuate the town of Blacksmith to get away from a toxic cloud. He offers a prostitute twenty-five dollars to let him do the Heimlich maneuver on her so he can feel like a hero.
- Murray meets with Jack on campus and listens to Jack's story about Babette's drug problem. He also learns that Jack is going to die from his exposure to a toxic chemical. In brutal honesty, Murray tells Jack that he's glad Jack is dying instead of himself. He also tells Jack that he (Jack) might feel better about dying if he kills someone.
