The Windigo

The Windigo figure seems to be a favorite of Erdrich's, as it appears in several of her novels including Tracks and The Antelope Wife. "Windigo," however is Erdrich's first published work to feature this trope of Chippewa lore, and a prime example of her ability to weave elements of an oral storytelling tradition into her hybrid style of literature. With a tone as mysterious and dark as the wintry northern landscapes in which many of her stories take place, we know this could only be the shadowy, ethereal universe of Louise Erdrich.
