Dorothy Gale Timeline and Summary
MoreDorothy Gale Timeline and Summary
- Dorothy and Toto live a quiet life on a farm in Kansas until a cyclone picks up their house and deposits them in a strange, faraway land called Oz.
- She meets the Munchkins and the Good Witch of the North, who seem friendly enough. They have good news and bad news. The good news is Dorothy (well, technically, Dorothy's house) killed the Wicked Witch of the East. The bad news is they have no idea where Kansas is.
- Dorothy's alarmed that she killed someone, but her priority is getting back to Kansas. After collecting a pair of silver shoes from the dead witch, Dorothy sets off down the yellow brick road to find the Wizard of Oz, who may be able to help her. The journey will be dark and full of peril, though.
- On the road, Dorothy comes upon some new friends: the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion. Each decides to join her on her quest.
- Dorothy and her new friends encounter some challenges along the way, including rabid beasts, giant ditches, a roaring river, and a deadly poppy field.
- Finally, they arrive at the Emerald City. There, the wizard makes a deal with Dorothy: if she kills the Wicked Witch of the West, he'll send her back to Kansas.
- Dorothy and her friends head toward the west. Dorothy is captured by the witch. Eventually Dorothy kills her (accidentally).
- She and her friends return to the Emerald City, but the wizard leaves them hanging for days. Finally, they're admitted to the throne room, where they get a nasty surprise: the wizard is just some old dude with no magical powers.
- Eventually the wizard comes up with a plan. He and Dorothy will take a hot-air balloon ride back to the U.S. But the balloon accidentally takes off without Dorothy, and she remains stuck in Oz.
- On the advice of a soldier, Dorothy and her friends head south to consult with the Good Witch of the South. They're hoping she'll have an idea about how Dorothy can get home.
- Along the way, the travelers encounter more challenges, including violent trees, a giant spider, and armless men who have hammers for heads(!). They persevere.
- In the south, the good witch tells Dorothy she has always had the power to return home. It's in her silver shoes.
- Delighted, Dorothy and Toto go home. Uncle Henry and Aunt Em are there waiting for them, with a brand new farmhouse to boot!
