Anthony P. Kirby (Edward Arnold)’s Timeline and Summary
- Mr. Kirby returns from Washington, DC, where he has gotten assurances that his monopoly deal will not be blocked.
- He is going to buy all the property around Mr. Ramsey's factory, forcing him to close, and then Kirby will have a munitions monopoly.
- One person won't sell though, so Kirby tells his agent, Mr. Blakely to force the sale.
- Meanwhile, Kirby's son Tony wants to marry his secretary, Alice Sycamore.
- Kirby doesn't want his son to marry Alice, but is humoring him.
- Kirby and his wife go to meet the eccentric Sycamore family for dinner. It is a disaster, with fireworks explosions, and they all end up in jail.
- In jail, Kirby discovers that Grandpa Vanderhof is the one who won't sell.
- They all get out of jail, but Alice is so mad at the Kirbys' snobbery that she breaks up with Tony and runs away.
- Vanderhof agrees to sell the house, and so Kirby has his deal.
- Tony tells Kirby that he's going to leave his job as vice-president. Mr. Kirby is very upset that Tony is going away.
- Kirby leaves the bank and goes to Grandpa for advice.
- The two play a harmonica duet, Alice and Tony are reconciled, and Kirby gives Grandpa back the house.
- Kirby and Tony are reconciled as well, which makes Kirby very happy.
