Tony Kirby (James Stewart)’s Timeline and Summary

  • At college, Tony works with a friend Bob Smith on trying to develop solar energy.
  • After college, he gives up on solar energy, and joins his father's bank.
  • His father promotes him to vice-president. Around the same time, he falls in love with Alice, his secretary.
  • He wants to marry Alice, but she's worried that his parents will disapprove (they do).
  • Alice invites his family to her house for dinner. Tony deliberately gets the day wrong.
  • Chaos results, including firework explosions, and everyone gets arrested.
  • At the jail, the Kirbys don't want to admit their son is connected to Alice. Alice gets angry, breaks up with Tony, and leaves town.
  • Tony is heartbroken and keeps going to the Sycamore house to see if Alice has returned.
  • He tells his father he's quitting the bank.
  • He returns to the Sycamore house, and runs into Alice there. She won't speak to him.
  • But then Tony's father shows up; he has had a change of heart and agrees to the marriage. Alice and Tony are happy.
