French microbiologist Louis Pasteur was born on this day in 1822. His invention of a process that treats milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, fittingly called pasteurization, is what allows you to enjoy an ice-cold glass of milk without barfing. Pasteur also created vaccines for rabies and anthrax. Fittingly, the bacteriologist did not like to shake hands.
