dec 28 Learn More Thomas Paine Arrested for Treason

Thomas Paine was arrested in France on this day in 1793. His crime? Treason. Paine was vocal about not digging the death penalty, which didn't go over well with the guillotine-happy French revolutionaries, and he was also writing a book, The Age of Reason, that claimed science was superior to religion. So the French locked him up, and President Monroe pulled all the strings he could to get the Common Sense author set free. It worked, but it wasn't long before The Age of Reason hit American bookshops and ticked off everybody on that side of the Atlantic, too. Way to go, original T-Paine.
