Mississippi became the second state to secede from the Union on this day in 1861. It was also the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In fact, the people of Mississippi don't just celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday of May; they celebrate "National Memorial Day and Jefferson Davis' Birthday." (Costumes optional.)
