jan 31 Learn More 13th Amendment Approved
On this day in 1865, the House of Representatives approved the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery in the United States. Before it was ratified, two other potential 13th Amendments were considered, but both failed to secure enough votes to make it to the big show. One of those was the Titles of Nobility amendment, which would strip United States citizenship from anybody who adopts a fancy-shmancy title of nobility from another country without Congress's permission. Technically, the Titles of Nobility amendment is still pending. So if you've been thinking about becoming the Archduke of Genovia, it's time to get on that.
