Canal Boy was shot and mortally wounded on this day in 1881. We're sorry; you probably know him better as President James A. Garfield. Garfield earned his nickname because, as a teenager, he ran away to work on canal boats that ran cargo between Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Turns out, he was terrible at it. The future president only lasted six weeks and fell overboard no less than fourteen times before returning home.
