jul 06 Learn More Althea Gibson Wins Wimbledon
On this day in 1957, Althea Gibson became the first African American to win Wimbledon. She was basically the Jackie Robinson of tennis, and an inspiration to a stable of stars including Billie Jean King and the Williams sisters. When all was said and done, Gibson took home eleven Grand Slam titles. Then she set her sights on the fairway. In the '60s she became the first African American to compete on the women's pro golf tour.
