jul 24 Learn More Machu Picchu Discovered
Machu Picchu was discovered on this day in 1911. Kind of. Some claim that the Incan site was never lost in the first place. When explorer Hiram Bingham III found it, he was actually looking for another city, Vilcabamba. Then he decided that Vilcabamba and Machu Picchu were the same place. (They weren't.) And when Bingham showed up at Machu Picchu, there were already three farming families living there. So it seem that Machu Picchu was "discovered" by Bingham about as much as America was "discovered" by Christopher Columbus.
