The Battle of Midway began on this day in 1942. After three days of wet and wild warfare, the United States Navy handed the Imperial Japanese Navy their first defeat in almost seventy-nine years and turned the tide of war in favor of the Allies. As important as the battle was, the battlefield itself has been notoriously difficult to study, as much of the wreckage is more than 17,000 feet below the surface of the ocean. We know what you're thinking: "Let's train some sharks to be archaeologists. We'll call 'em… sharkaeologists!" Sadly, sharks can't swim that deep.
