George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984 was published on this day in 1949, and it plunked several new words, phrases, and concepts into the English language: Thought Police, doublethink, and Big Brother. That said, we're pretty sure unemployed models and bartenders fighting over breakfast cereal and making out in a hot tub isn't the first association Orwell had in mind when he coined the term "Big Brother."
