Native American author Louise Erdrich was born on this day in 1954. When she was a child, her father paid her a nickel for every story she wrote—which explains why so many of her childhood tales are only two sentences long. Jk, but Erdrich has gone on to write numerous novels, collections of poetry and short stories, children's books, and nonfiction books. We're confident that she was paid significantly more than a nickel for each.
