Anne Frank was born on this day in 1929, and on this day in 1942, she got an autograph book for her 13th birthday. She decided to turn it into a diary, and the rest is history. The Diary of a Young Girl has sold over 30 million copies, been translated into 67 languages, and become part of the curriculum in many American schools. Of course, several schools have also banned it, including, most notably and nonsensically, a textbook committee in Alabama who tried to prevent students from reading it because it was "a real downer." Oof.
