Over 3,200 civil rights demonstrators began a march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery on this day in 1965. The activists, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., had tried to make this trek twice before, but were stopped by state troopers both times. Maybe the third time really is the charm. (Having the support of the United States Army is a pretty sweet charm, too.) Five months later, the Voting Rights Act was signed, finally giving African Americans the right to vote.
