Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson was born on this day in 1850, and in 1891, he gave his birthday away. He was living in Samoa at the time, and the U.S. Commissioner's daughter was bummed about being born on Christmas Day. So, the generous author of Treasure Island whipped up a mock legal document in which he "officially" handed over his birthday to the thoroughly stoked preteen.
