You've probably noticed E Pluribus Unum written on all those coins you lose in the cafeteria vending machine. You may even know that it means "Out of many, one." But did you know that the phrase originated with Virgil when he was waxing poetic about some salad dressing? The Roman lyricist, who was born on this day in 70 BCE, was trying to explain how individual ingredients would blend together to make a tasty vinaigrette in his poem "Moretum." Mmm, ranch.
