oct 25 Learn More Charge of the Light Brigade
The infamous Charge of the Light Brigade took place on this day in 1854 when, in the midst of the Crimean War, miscommunication in the British military resulted in Lord Cardigan leading his light cavalry brigade, usually reserved for recon missions, into battle against heavily armed Russian forces. Roughly one-third of Cardigan's guys went to the great battlefield in the sky. More renowned than the actual fight is Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem of the same name, which crops up in pop culture everywhere from Top Gear to Mass Effect 3 to Iron Maiden's "The Trooper."
