What do you like to do for fun? Read? Play video games? Shoot hoops? If you're J.R.R. Tolkien, who died on this day in 1973, you invent entire languages. The two most famous tongues the author constructed are Quenya and Sindarin, both of which were developed for The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was an accomplished learner of languages, too. In addition to English, he reportedly knew or knew-ish French, German, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Russian, Lombardic, and Serbian.
