sep 22 Learn More Emancipation Proclamation Issued


President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on this day in 1862. It freed all of the slaves living in the Confederacy. Way to go, Abe! Everybody's free! Not exactly. The Emancipation Proclamation didn't do jack for slaves in the border states: Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. They had to wait until the 13th Amendment came along and outlawed slavery everywhere.
