University of Portland
About Me
Intro
I know what you're probably thinking: A Catholic school in Portland? That's like trying to build a fire underwater—it just doesn't make sense (usually). But that's where you're wrong. Like any good parfait, I come in layers—lots of delicious, nutritious layers.
For starters, I'm a social butterfly. There's no such thing as a "typical" UP student, and that's just the way I like it. I bring together students of all backgrounds, whether they're hardcore partiers, social activists, or proudly religious. One thing my students all share in common is an appreciation for diversity and an eagerness to meet people they may not have otherwise had the chance to.
I have something for everyone. Whether it's my top-notch athletics, my renowned nursing school, or my awesome business program, you'll find your place during your four years here.
But be warned: Don't expect to work on your tan here. One good thing about my long, wet winters is you have lots of time to stay inside and study. I'm pretty challenging academically, so if you want to do well, you'll need to be driven and proactive. If you think I'm going to let you just show up to class and pass, think again—I have a reputation to uphold, thank you very much.
So if you'd like your college experience with a dollop of hipster and a side of spiritual guidance, check me out. You'll be drinking gourmet kombucha and putting birds on things in no time.
Name
Wally the Pilot. Riverboat pilot, to be precise.
Hometown
Portland, Oregon. The best in the Northwest.
Birthdate
1901
Body Type
I'm small in stature with just over 3000 students, but I've got a solid athletic build. Some of my sports teams are among the best in the country and my students tend to be pretty sporty in general. I'm located in such a beautiful part of the country and there are tons of opportunities for fun outdoor activities on weekends. You can bet I take advantage of that.
Keeping in shape is really important to me, so I make sure all the food on campus is organic and locally grown. Even if you're vegan and gluten-free, have no fear. Like most of Portland, I am very friendly to people with dietary restrictions.
Current Living Situation
My students live in cushy dorms for their first two years of school. I have nine residence halls on campus, and each one comes with a resident priest.
It might sound weird to think of a priest in your freshman dorm, but my students overwhelmingly approve of the system and love the sense of community living on campus. Upperclassmen tend to live in houses off campus where they do a great job of keeping the community spirit alive.
Relationship Status
My biggest rivals are Gonzaga and Saint Mary's. We may all be Catholic-affiliated schools, but that doesn't keep things from getting heated during a good game.
Religion
I'm officially a Roman Catholic school. I have a campus ministry and priests galore, though only about 50% of my students are actually Catholic. I'm open to people of all faiths and backgrounds—it's my diversity that makes me such an awesome place to attend.
Politics
As a Catholic school, I hold true to the Church's ideals. But of course, I'm totally open to all kinds of people and very accepting of other opinions. All hipsters (both liberal and conservative) are welcome.
You should apply to me if...
you like good things in small packages. I've got beauty and brains; what more could you ask for?
