Bloomsburg University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Nursing. Not to brag, but my nursing program is recognized as a leading accredited undergraduate and graduate level facility. I hold a partnership with Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), allowing my nursing students to get hands on experience in the medical field.

  • Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. My Education of the Deaf teacher preparation program is nationally and state accredited. Both of my undergraduate and graduate programs prepare prospective teachers of deaf and hard of hearing students in oral, total communication, and bilingual environments.

  • Speech-Language Pathology. My speech-language pathology graduate program is ranked among the top in the country.

  • Football. Have you ever heard of Jahri Evans? Let me give you a hint: He's now the Offensive guard for the New Orleans Saints. Yah, he graduated from here.

  • Writing. Not a very good writer? Don't worry, I am. The Bloomsburg University Writing Center is loaded with experienced student writers ready to help you with all of your essay's needs.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. The amazing (and inventive) Micro fridge. Combining both a fridge and a microwave, this invention is perfect for dorm life.

  2. Lots of gold and maroon in your wardrobe.

  3. Your hiking boots. You're going to want to get over to Ricketts Glenn State Park at least a couple of times.

  4. Winter gear. I tend to get pretty cold in the winter. That's what you get when you build a school in the mountains of Northern PA.

  5. A good pair of sneakers. Everything is uphill.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • Bloomsburg Fair. Every September I hold a weeklong festival on the Bloomsburg fair grounds. Here you can engorge yourself with delicious fried food, play fair games, browse/shop from local sellers, be entertained by various famous bands and singers, and enjoy visiting the prized animals. It's a blast.

  • Block Party. Block Party is to Huskies as Coachella is to Hipsters.

  • The Big Event. "The Big Event" is an annual community service project where my students (about 2,000) help area residents with spring cleaning chores including painting, raking, gardening, and anything else we can do to help make Bloomsburg a better town for its citizens.

  • Relay for Life. I'm a big advocate for Relay for Life. Every year I hold the event in my Rec Center where Greek life and a majority of my campus clubs join together to raise money for cancer research.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Sadly, if you're under twenty-one there, isn't a lot to do off campus. However, my Student Program Board always has events planned for the weekend so that you won't get bored. These events include Bingo, Midnight Pizza, Karaoke, movies in the "Hideaway," as well as visiting magicians, comedians, and hypnotists. We also have a pretty extensive Greek life that you can join.

When you finally do turn the big two-one, there are a range of bars to go to. If you like the lively party scene, you can either visit Capital or Hardware. However, if you're into the mellower, karaoke, pool playing, and trivia scene, you can visit West End Ale or Good Old Days (GODs).

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Bloom Beach. Okay, so it's not an actual beach (remember, I'm in the mountains), but it's the closest I can get. Bloom Beach in a fun area by the local lake where you can enjoy hanging out with friends and the refreshing cool water.

  • The Big Chill. Who doesn't love homemade ice cream?

  • Knoebels. This awesome amusement park is only twenty minutes away. What are you waiting for?

  • Marley's Brewery and Grille. They have the most amazing cheese fries ever. Also, they have trivia every Monday night.

  • Graffiti Highway. About thirty minutes away is the deserted city of Centralia. You may have heard of this city from the documentary "The Town that Was" created in 2007. The city was evacuated due to the out of control fires that run through the mines under the city. "Graffiti Highway" is a deserted path that is "chalk" full of local art. It's a great place to leave your mark on the world.

Quirks:

  • I used to be called "Bloomsburg Literary Institute".., in the 1800s.

  • My mascot is named "Roongo" because I thought it would be clever to combine my school colors to make the name: gold and maroon. Punny.

  • In 2011 my entire town was flooded. I had to evacuate all of my students for an entire week. I missed them so much.

  • I am the largest comprehensive university in Northeastern and North central Pennsylvania.

  • The "Buffalo Chicken Pizza" and the "Husky" on campus are to die for.

  • Bloomsburg is the Seattle of Pennsylvania. The weather changes in the blink of an eye.

  • Bloomsburg is the only incorporated town in Pennsylvania.
