Cabrillo College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. I've got a brand spankin' new STEM center where staff and students gather to tutor and learn.

  • Baseball. I have one of the best junior college teams on the west coast.

  • Caring. I want students to succeed and I do everything I can to make that happen. The small class sizes here make it easy for teachers to be personally involved in students' progress.

  • Being green. The Cabrillo Sustainability Council helps me out with this. I have recycling containers all over my campus. I also have a bunch of bike lockers. Cycle on over to me.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Yerba Mate. It's a carbonated, caffeinated beverage in a can. If you've never seen it before, you'll definitely see it when you meet me.

  2. Sandals or flip-flops. There will be tons of sunny days at the beach.

  3. A reusable water bottle. Increase hydration and decrease plastic waste.

  4. Access to a computer. Online quizzes are required in most of my classes.

  5. Open minds and open hearts. Not literally…though we do have cadavers onsite for the anatomy students.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • I'm number one in transfers to UC Santa Cruz. If you want to be a Banana Slug, you can start by being a Seahawk.

  • Dwight Lowery, football player for San Jose State and the New York Jets, began his career with me in 2004.

  • I'm beautiful. Countless trees on campus, views of redwoods, and the ocean is right outside some of my classrooms. What more could you ask for?

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Usually, Saturday nights are spent at a friends' place, chillin' and doing our own thing. I've also been known to attend a party or two—sometimes house parties, sometimes beach-bonfire parties. One of my favorite night-out places is called The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, where there's great food, drinks, and live music.

Social life on campus is pretty much limited to club involvement; so if you want to feel like a part of the Seahawk community on campus, join a club or sports team.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The Gazebo. This is an awesome coffee stand near the center of my campus.

  • Seacliff State Beach. You'll find an old concrete ship chillin' in the water here (literally and figuratively—that ocean water is not warm).

  • Downtown Santa Cruz. The downtown area is home to tons of interesting street entertainers and delicious food of all kinds.

Quirks:

  • My parking situation is kind of a bummer. There is serious competition for parking spots during the first couple weeks of every semester. But once everyone gets settled in their routine, it gets a little better. Let's just say I highly recommend carpooling.

  • In January of 2015, I implemented a smoking ban on my campus, which is great for all of us non-smokers. For those of you who smoke, you'll have to walk twenty feet off of campus.

Famous Alumni:

  • Bruce McPherson, California Secretary of State from 2005 to 2007
  • Dwight Lowery, football player for San Jose State and the New York Jets
  • Brendon Ayanbadejo, football player for the Baltimore Ravens
  • Denise Crosby, actress known for her role on Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Camryn Manheim, actress known for her role on ABC's The Practice
