Physical Danger

Physical Danger

You? In physical danger? Of course not. Look how graceful and smooth your movements are. Sure, you've been standing on the top of your toes in a way no human body was ever intended to do since the time you were twelve, but there's no way a lifetime of leaping and jumping could have serious lifelong consequences, leading to multiple hip surgeries. Right?

Actually, the number of injured ballerinas dancing through the pain is staggering. An estimated 80% of ballerinas have been injured in ways that are painful, career-ending, or just plain gross

Either way, studies have shown ballerinas have a pain threshold more than three times that of a normal person. Why? Oh, yeah, maybe because they're in a lot of pain. All. The. Time.

So you think you can work through the pain? Are you also naturally five feet tall and do you weigh one hundred pounds? Because if not, and you're not into starving yourself (don't do that), you'll have a really rough time in the ballet world, where a jutting collarbone is standard-issue.

Just look at Anastasia Volochkova, who was fired for reaching the terrible, awful, unacceptable weight of 110 pounds.

Bottom line: don't go into this line of work if you like being nice to your body.
