General quality of life statement

As long as there are things to be counted, tested, tabulated, analyzed, and modeled, there will be jobs for mathematicians. When you're someone who's able to develop, evaluate and analyze useful surveys, who's comfortable processing large amounts of data and have it make sense to people who aren't comfortable doing the math…there will always be a job for you.

But what kind of job?

That depends on you. The money a mathematician can make varies pretty widely, depending on what area he or she's working in. A research statistician working for a private company makes an annual salary of approximately $65,000, while a health statistician can earn about $20,000 more. Sports statisticians can make anywhere from $75K-120K a year. Of course, those in a supervisory position may earn even more.

A hard-working bookie in Vegas can earn upwards of $200K a year by simply knowing the statistics, the odds, and understanding the completely fragile nature of the gambler.

So, the choice is yours. You can take the gamble and get lucky, or work in a steady nine to five making an average wage. Quality of life also depends upon how much you enjoy what you are doing. That's pretty tough to quantify though. We'll let you do the math on that one.
