Second graders are no longer newbies when it comes to their ABCs and by now, they've added plenty of new sight words to their vocabulary catalog. 

The next step in developing second graders' reading foundational skills is getting them to decode more words on their own. This standard's substandards ask students to get well-acquainted with long and short vowel sounds, additional vowel teams, and common prefixes and suffixes.
