Manhattanville College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Bringing together international students. Seriously, count how many languages you hear just walking through the cafeteria.

  • Lending a helping hand. Who offers up 30,000 hours of community service and counting? This guy.

  • The kind of faculty care that makes you feel like a student rather than a number. What does that mean for the perennial ditcher? Don't be surprised if you get a call or email from your professor when you miss class.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Headphones. When you're sharing a room with three other freshman, these little miracles will be your ultimate form of privacy.

  2. Clothing for all sorts of crazy weather. From rain storms to blizzards to the kind of humidity that will have you debating how little clothing is really necessary to go to class, you're going to experience it all here on the east coast. Keep that in mind when packing.

  3. Some serious dorm decor. The rooms here are pretty bland so you'll want to liven them up with plenty of style and color. Just not a Bob Marley poster, please. Don't be that college kid.

  4. An open mind. You're going to be sharing a tiny campus with students from all around the world, so you're bound to be exposed to ideas and personalities that are different from yours. It's an amazing experience if you're ready to embrace it.

  5. Cafe/Pub Cash. Those late night cram sessions are so much better when you can reward yourself with a face full of fries.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

Wait, what? You've heard of me? I guess I do have a couple claims to fame…

  • Directors just can't get enough of me. Movies like The Thomas Crown Affair and Admissions as well shows like Law and Order: SVU and Boardwalk Empire have been filmed here.

  • More than a couple Kennedys have attended me.

  • Former President Grace Cowardin Dammann, spoke out for racial integration in the 1940s with her speech "Principles vs. Prejudice," which was published and widely shared. It paved the way for other religious institutions to support integration as well.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Arcading it up at the Game Zone or hanging in the Pub. I'm also a big fan of the frequent parties thrown by the campus clubs. Let's not forget about the city either. All the most amazing entertainment, dining, and...well, basically anything you could ever want to do is only thirty miles away.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Dorm dwellers, unite. Call us homebodies if you will, but there's something irresistible about just kicking back with friends in our poster-covered rooms.

  • The Game Zone. This is a great spot to goof off and let the stress of midterms get gobbled up by Pac-Man.

  • The Pub. Whether chowing down on a chicken wrap and fries or dancing the night away, the Pub is a staple of social life here at the Ville.

Quirks:

  • I started out as a Catholic all-girls boarding school on the Lowest East Side of NYC.

  • My commitment to social issues and service runs deep. My students have been encouraged to volunteer and help out with underprivileged children in Harlem for the past hundred years.

Famous Alumni:

  • Karen Akers: Singer, actress, and Tony Award nominee

  • Rose Kennedy: President John F Kennedy's mother

  • Carmen Marc Valvo: Fashion designer.

  • Jean Kennedy Smith: American diplomat and former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland (the Kennedy women love M'Ville)

  • Kitty Pilgrim: Emmy, Peabody, and Dupont award-winning CNN News anchor and correspondent
