Lindsey Von, Jonny Moseley, and maybe Picabo Street. Ever heard of 'em? Besides these three-ish world-class Olympians, famous skiers are few and far between. That is to say, unless someone follows the sport religiously, a lot of the top athletes are sailing below the mainstream radar.

Since there are only a handful of skiers who are household names, NCAA skiers—even the best ones—receive virtually zero media attention. Basically, there aren't going to be many skiers in the ESPN SportsCenter Top Ten Countdown. Sorry.

As for the super elite few who do manage to become widely recognized (like the ones we mentioned), they gain their recognition from being in the Winter Olympics and not the NCAA. Skiing fame is a long game, to say the very least. And that means NCAA skiers aren't the hottest thing on the market, even to obsessive skiing fans.

Even though famous skiers are really a thing, that doesn't mean college athletes don't get local love from their fans. In programs like the University of Denver's, where skiing is a big deal (largely due to geographical reasons), people around town and on campus are more likely to follow the sport and maybe even recognize particularly talented skiers. So if you're a superstar at a top skiing school, maybe you'll collect the occasional unexpected high-five while walking around town.

At smaller Division-III schools, however, skiers will probably receive much less attention and adoration compared to schools where ski culture thrives. Your mom will still totally be proud of you, though. Thanks, Mom.
