Now, the same fate that landed on Israel befalls Judah: destruction of their land, then exile. The dish-wiping metaphor is particularly striking, though it implies that this isn't a purely destructive act. It's meant to cleanse Jerusalem, which will probably be of use to God again, in the future.

Josiah's efforts to purify Judah are immense—but a little too late. They're enough to make sure God rewards his (Josiah's) righteousness, but they're not enough to save Judah as a whole.
