A Little Less Girl Chapter 5 Summary

Jake

  • It's the first day of senior year and Jake is having breakfast in his kitchen with his best friend, Blister. His first name is actually Kevin, but after he got blisters on the monkey bars in second grade the name just kind of stuck. Second grade nicknames will do that in a small town.
  • Jake's mom still isn't amused by Jake's look. He's letting his hair grow long and refusing to shave, but she much prefers a more put-together son.
  • She mentions that Jake's dad is willing to have his Jeep fixed if Jake gets back on the swim team and agrees to coach. Sure, it's blackmail, but how else is Jake going to get his car up and running with no money in the bank?
  • Until then, Jake and Blister have to walk to school. As they're making their way, Katrina pulls up in her baby blue VW Beetle. Do they want a ride? Will Jake talk to her? No and no. So she drives away.
  • Blister can't believe that Jake has dumped such an unbelievably hot girl. Maybe she'll be so heartbroken that she'll off herself like Amy, Blister jokes.
  • Jake doesn't find it funny (shocking). Besides, Katrina is way too self-centered to do something like that.
  • At school, Jake sees the yellow Mustang in the parking lot.
  • And he notices a whole bunch of people staring at him. Wow, he really hates this town—he'll be so glad when high school is over and he can get out of here.
  • Inside Jake's locker, he finds a pair of leopard print panties. Katrina strikes again.
  • Alex is pretty impressed, though, so Jake hands him the underwear.
  • Unfortunately one of their teachers, Mr. Dermott, sees the whole thing. Teachers, right?
  • Mr. Dermott is like a rock star at Raynesville High School; he's the cool teacher everyone loves. He and Jake were fine with each other until Amy died, but after that little event, Mr. Dermott made it clear that he thought it was all Jake's fault Amy took such a downward spiral and started crash-dieting.
  • Mr. Dermott mentions that Jake's GPA has really taken a nosedive. Guess scholarships are out, then?
  • Wow. It's going to be a long year…
