Character Analysis

DeeDee is a patient that Esther meets at Wymark, another dorm at the psychiatric institution for patients who are transitioning back into the outside world. To Esther, DeeDee seems surprisingly normal, a woman who acts just like any other society woman with her bridge and her glossy magazines and her music. DeeDee as a character brings out the similarities between ordinary women and the women in the asylum, showing how all women are in bell jars of their own. DeeDee later shocks Esther when Esther discovers that DeeDee is having an affair with Joan.
